FAQ's and more information

Satellite broadband is the ideal solution for those who live in rural areas where traditional fixed-line based broadband services or 4G aren’t available. We install a satellite dish to provide you with two-way access to broadband services with speeds which used to be lower have improved with download speeds of up to 50 Mbps. One of the big bonuses of satellite broadband is that we can provide it virtually anywhere in the world. All you need is a clear line of sight (generally to the south).

Satellite broadband uses geostationary satellites* – not telephone lines or cables – to deliver an internet signal directly to your home. The satellite provides two-way data communications between a satellite dish mounted on the exterior of your home and our broadband shack hub here on Earth.

For example, when you click on a web link, that request is sent from your computer to the satellite. The satellite then transmits the signal to our hub, where the specific website you’ve requested is located and it’s beamed back to the satellite. The data is then sent to your dish and the site loads on your computer through a modem connected to the dish. While the internet signal travels a staggering distance back and forth, it only takes a handful of seconds for this entire process to occur. With satellite internet, you can connect all the computers and internet-enabled devices in your home to the web.

* The satellite always stays in the same position above Earth by matching Earth’s rotation velocity as it orbits the planet.

The fair use policy (FUP) system is a network management tool that uses advanced technology to monitor how much of the finite network data and bandwidth resource is being used by each user. Quite simply, the policy is designed to make sure all our customers get the service you expect and that you are paying for and that no one is gobbling up too much data and ruining connectivity for the rest of us.

The tool uses specific algorithms to identify disproportionate use and that is then gradually restricted by the Fair Use Policy and a higher priority is assigned to end users with a lower volume of consumption.

Please see the legal section in the footer for the FUP that applies to your specific plan.

To get connected we will supply you with a dish, transceiver (attached to the dish), cable (routed into the property) and modem (to be plugged in inside your property). We can also supply you with a wireless router as an optional extra that will work seamlessly with your satellite broadband.

All of this kit will be delivered to you in one simple delivery. You do have the option of self-installation. If you’re handy with a drill then our handy instruction video will be all you need. Otherwise we will arrange for a local accredited broadband shack installer to visit for our standard professional installation charge.

If you request professional installation, we will try our best to find a mutually convenient time for the installer to visit. Your location may have an impact on the dates or times that we can offer.

Broadband Shack can connect you to download speeds of up to 50 Mpbs, although this does vary slightly depending on which satellite we can connect you to in your location.

What does ‘up to’ mean?

The ‘up to’ speeds which are quoted by all providers across broadband technologies describe the maximum download speed in Megabits per second (Mbps) that you can expect to achieve with that service.

In common with all other broadband technologies, satellite broadband is a ‘contended’ service which means that your speed at any given time is determined by a number of factors including: the server speed of websites you’re using; the number of users sharing the network’s bandwidth; and how your home network is set up and the router you use.

You can use a wired or wireless router to connect your system’s terminal to several PC’s or tablets, smartphones or other wireless devices in your home. Just so you know we can supply a wired/wireless router to meet your needs, although it will come at an additional cost. If you feel you will need one – and most of us do these days – then just select it as an optional extra during the checkout process online or let one of our team know when you place your order over the phone.

You can access your standard free email platforms such as Gmail, Hotmail or BT or you can add an email account with us at an additional cost. If you’re looking to access your emails in Microsoft Outlook, please refer to your email hosting providers settings for information on how to set this up.

‘First-person shooter’ games

For most online gaming you will experience very few issues. However, it’s only fair to warn you that we don’t recommend our systems for ‘first-person shooter’ games. Satellite broadband is great for many things but not for the rapid exchanges of data that these games need to be properly enjoyed. The time lag involved will lead to frozen screens, jumpy gameplay and, most likely, smashed mousepads; geeks call this delay ‘latency’.
